- This is one that i play over and over in my car when i take my night drives (night drives are an absolute must when you live in the deep south) Charleston was founded in 1670, and inhabited at least 200 years before that, so when the windows roll down and the warm, salt air starts pushing through your fingers and hair, and all the sudden you start to taste the Atlantic in your mouth and a heavy weight starts pressing down on your chest like a old quilt, you can actually feel the history, the ancientness of Charleston and it’s people seeping into you, pore to pore, then digging deeper into the sinew and corpuscles of your body, until it completely permeates your DNA. It’s hard to understand, but once you smell the night air in July/August while you walk downtown you’ll start to understand it.
